GIVING WHAT WE HAVE
Once we ask, God will likely turn the tables. What do we have to give? Heâll probably tell us to get to work and to use our resources as part of the solution. Yet God typically isnât asking us to risk everything. Heâs asking usâlike the widowâto start with what we have.
Itâs easy to focus on what we donât have. I donât have financial security. I donât have a husband to support me. I donât have an advanced degree. I donât have respect in the community. I donât have resources or position. My house is empty.
Yet when we focus on what we have to give, everything changes. Itâs not up to us anymore, itâs up to God. Like the widow, we put our oil on the table. Like the little boy, we reach into our pockets and give Jesus our lunch. No, itâs not much. But it doesnât have to be. In giving God what we have, we donât refuse the work God puts before us. It doesnât matter if the work is beneath us. It doesnât matter if itâs not what we had in mind. Pouring oil into empty jugs doesnât make any sense. But God is in the business of starting small and going bigâwhich sometimes means starting by opening up the cupboard.
